Stabilization Survey - Historic Kaymoor Mine

Cooperative
Agreement CA 4000-6-8016 between the National Park Service and the West
Virginia Board of Regents, on behalf of West Virginia University.
Client Contact: Dennis R. Reidenback, Regional Chief, Contracting and
Property Management, Mid-Atlantic Region.
The project performed in
association with West Virginia University consisted of the investigation of the
entire original Kaymoor Mine site, including openings, buildings, coke ovens,
history and operations; report on existing conditions; evaluation of public
safety issues; and recommendations for stabilization and/or restoration of site
components and cost estimate for our recommendations.
The value of our
recommendation was $1,180,000.00.
Relocation and Restoration - Mary Conrad Log
House Stonewall Jackson Dam Project Roanoke, West Virginia
This project was performed as consultant with two firms: Dodson -
Lindblom Associates, Inc., Columbus, Ohio - Relocation, Project No.
DACW59-85-D-0002; and GAI Consultants, Inc., Monroeville, PA - Restoration,
Contract No. DACW59-88-D-0006.

The First Phase of work was to
design the relocation of the log building from its original site to a new
roadside park in cooperation with the West Virginia Department of Highways. The
scope included design and preparation of detail construction drawings for the
relocation, design of new foundation, stabilization of building for move,
orientation at new site, and cost estimates.
The Second Phase of work
was to design rehabilitation/restoration of Mary Conrad house after relocation,
including narratives, construction documents, details, field inspection and
cost estimates.
Total value of project - $78,000.00.
Restoration - Sites Homestead Seneca

Restoration of 19th
century farm house. The earliest part of the house was an 1830's single pen log
building. Later expansion built upon and around the log structure. The Forest
Service decided to leave interior structure exposed so that period structural
systems (log, braced frame, balloon frame) could be
interpreted.
Restoration work included stabilization of deteriorated
structure, repair and/or rebuild of timbers, new windows (after remnants of an
existing sash), new roof and siding to match original, and restoration of new
chimneys.
Construction value - $110,000.00.
Restoration of Philippi Covered

Restoration of mid-19th century
Covered Bridge. Built in 1852 by pioneer bridge builder Lemuel Chenoweth, the
Philippi Covered Bridge was the scene of a skirmish in June 1861, which has
been cited as the first land battle of the Civil War. The bridge accidentally
burned on February 2, 1989. Subsequently a decision was made to restore the
structure to the date of the Civil War engagement.
Restoration work
included disassembly, restoration, stabilization and reconstruction of heavy
timber components, new roof and siding to match original specifications. The
team was responsible for training workers, maintaining construction records,
and performing construction management.
Construction value -
$3,000,000.00.
Restoration - Arthurdale Community

Director
Restoration and Adaptive Use of several buildings in the
historic Arthurdale Community Center. Arthurdale was a community planned by the
Federal Government during the Great Depression years and designed to assist
unemployed workers in retraining and subsistence living. The buildings include
an assembly center, shop, a forge, administrative building, service station,
store, and garages.
Work consists of restoration and adaptive use of the
original buildings. Construction includes concrete work, carpentry, roofing,
plumbing, HVAC, electrical, masonry, windows, doors and site
work.
Construction value - $800,000.00.
Relocation and Restoration - Blaker Grist

Paul D. Marshall & Associates, Inc. was the prime
design contractor. Consultants were John Milner Associates and Dr. Emory L.
Kemp.
The late 18th century grist mill was thoroughly documented,
match-marked, completely disassembled, moved 160 miles, restored and
reassembled. Its orientation is identical to the original and a pond built to
represent the original dam on its mill stream. The mill building contained most
of its original fabric but there was considerable deterioration of timbers and
gear wheels. These wer painstakingly restored to original condition. The
photographs show the building on its original site, and in the final stage of
reconstruction.

Paul D. Marshall & Associates,
Inc. was the designer and administrator of this contract. Work consisted of
removing modern intrusions, paint analysis, restoration of plaster ceiling, new
chandeliers and HVAC system, and painting in original colors. The replica rear
panel section was recreated from original drawings. Photographs show the room
before and after restoration.
Construction value - $87,000.00.
Brawley Walkway Facade Restoration Capitol

This downtown Charleston project, design and
administered by Paul D. Marshall & Associates, Inc. consisted of the
exterior facade restoration of nine buildings facing a pedestrian connection
between the old cental business district and a new major urban mall. Buildings
were cleaned and restored to their original appearance according the historic
photographs. Photographs show the area before restoration (note the modern
materials covering many areas) and two major buildings after
restortion.
